I ran out of some coffee recently and had to go to the grocery store to grab some beans. I know grocery store isn’t a great place for beans, but desperate times. In this situation I tend to gravitate towards getting stumptown or illy but both had recently gone up in price. Sitting next to them was a bag Dunkin’ coffee. I had recently seen the Epicurious video on grocery store coffee taste testing and they had said nice things about Dunkin’s grocery coffee. So I pick up the beans and go home. The first day I weighed some beans I noticed there’s a huge variation in the color, some very dark some very light (I guess that’s how they get to medium). The shot tasted terrible but I guess you get what you pay for. Today while weighing beans I saw there were some that don’t even look roasted???

Is this y’all’s normal experience for budget beans?

I tried some a few years ago and had the same experience as you.

Idk if it is good or bad, however remove those white beans from there as it will make your coffee taste bad

    Unironic rule of thumb:

If you see weird, lighter beans in your coffee (called Quakers), throw them out. They will make a whole shot taste bad, no matter the coffee.

Low cost blends use coffee of varying origin and of inconsistent size, because cheaper. Different beans roast different so also end up a different color. This is particularly bad though.

Honestly haven’t seen that variation of roast (or lack thereof), usually just tastes stale or burnt to a crisp.

If green tea good, green coffee better?

I’ve had times where it was the best I could afford, and it did okay for pour overs. I’ve even managed okay cold brew off Folgers.

Just bought a bag of Community , it gets the job done. I noticed it doesn’t smell as strong as my usual when I opened it. Not terrible

Excuse me why are there peanuts in your coffee beans?

I‘d rather go with some single origin coffee from trader joes or aldi instead

If i run out of specialty coffee i default to lavazza or kimbo stuffs.

But im a classic espresso enjoyer.

    It’s my fault. I have a phone.

  17. I buy ground Dunkin coffee from the grocery store in a pinch when I’m traveling; like staying at an AirBNB or a relative’s house with no proper coffee to be found. I tend to agree with the taste test you watched. It is one of the best widely available grocery store options for drip coffee. It’s not good, but it’s one of the few that is actually a genuine medium roast and has a little brightness to it.

I didn’t know it even came as whole bean coffee. I have never had much luck pulling espresso from grocery store beans regardless of brand so I don’t bother anymore. It is usually so stale that the shots are nearly impossible to dial in. I will say I’m surprised to see so many quakers in mass-produced coffee. Big roasters can afford better tooling to sort out quakers and rocks, they’re more common in coffee from lower-end small batch roasters IME.

It’s like they grabbed a handful of random beans I dropped on the floor where I roast and put it in a bag
